Subverted meanings on Magazine St, New Orleans
The images I am submitting were taken last year in New Orleans while I was walking down Magazine Street one afternoon and encountered as posted sign about raising awareness about gun violence in the city nearby a sign in a Quizno's window advertising "toasty bullet" sandwiches. Another empty storefront had a sign reading " FOR LEASE UPSCALE RETAIL WILL SUBDIVIDE" that was divided by a beam down the middle that seemed to pervert its meaning. The signs seemed evocative for their messages, their juxtapositions to one another, and their context within a city rapidly gentrifying while large numbers of residents are stuck in a cycle of poverty and violence.
