Two are from the Boston area taken a few months ago. The NH Plate is a nice commentary on the somewhat confrontational NH state motto that appears on their license plates. The Old City Hall photo made me think that everything public, particularly in politics, is up for sale or rent in Massachusetts.

I took the Blue Sky photo in downtown Buenos Aires last September, 2010. I can't say anything more about it beyond what it is.

After years of bemoaning the gang graffiti in my neighborhood, one day I saw an intriguing tag. It read “Puppet” in a pretty script. Or was it “Pupped?” The final letter was a strange combination of a D and a T. The inscrutability of the tagger’s intention intrigued me. I began noticing other odd tags, and soon decided to embroider them. I enjoy how the pieces aestheticize these signs of turf wars; they also embody an absurd kind of nesting activity as the furtive, speedy street markings are transformed with meticu­lous, tiny stitches into precious and permanent objects.

This sign was at a Lowe's home improvement store. There is such implied threat in the 3 question marks after "Have you read the communication binder today".

1. The Yukon sign was taken while on a trip to Alaska--nothing to ironic about it.

2. The Cola sign was taken at Gold Field, an old mining camp in Arizona, just outside Phoenix.

3. The building sign was taken in Globe, Arizona. It currently is a cigar store, but obviously has had a long history of various businesses.

The Yukon sign was shot with a Fuji S-2. (Alas it died a horrible dead senor death and I cried b/c the colors were so vibrant). This is the Yukon in June! This photographs doesn't show the snow caps, but it felt good to be out of the Phoenix summer heat of 110!.

The other two photographs were shot with Nikon D-90.
The cola signs is at Gold Field, AZ which is a mining town that has been revived as a tourist spot. Things are still pretty slow there though.
The wall signs formed some interesting "art" as each successive proprietor of that location painted on the alley wall of this corner store. Today it lives as a cigar store. The location is Globe, AZ a little more than 60 miles outside Phoenix.

i was recently commissioned by flux projects to create a series of 'roadside haiku' using the format of yard sale signs (aka bandit signs). 500 of the signs (ten haiku in editions of 50 each) are posted around the city of atlanta. i thought this might be of interest to your 'signs of our times' project.

the installation has raised a tiny tempest (a bit of fun to round out the dog days of summer i guess) as a local "city beautification" group came out in opposition to the signs, including a running story on the local ch 2 news. please see:

Each edition of 50 signs is dated, signed and numbered by the artist.
