We are constantly receiving messages from the universe but are often too preoccupied with our daily routines to hear or see them. Sometimes we smile, acknowledge their presence but choose to ignore the advice they carry, while at other times we just don't know how to interpret the information. Occasionally, the message is so literal, graphic and compelling that we have to pay attention. Signs are all around us waiting to be taken at face value...or not.

This was the voting form used in the referendum held from 9 to 15 January 2011 allowing South Sudan to become an independent state on 9 July 2011 at midnight (00:00) local time. After several decades of a civil war that was one of the longest lasting and deadliest wars of the latter 20th century (the First Sudanese Civil War and the Second Sudanese Civil War), a peace agreement known as the Naivasha Agreement was signed on January 9, 2005, giving autonomy to the state of South Sudan.

1. American Aggressors: from the Museum of Communism in Prague (above a McDonald's just to make sure Lenin is spinning in his box)

2. Hell Toast: from a restaurant in Prague, no idea what it means, but of course I want some. Didn't think toast had it in it.

3. Duck Tour: Was on the Corridor in Jamaica Plain, someone had spray painted FUCK YOU, and some optimist came along and corrected it to read DUCK TOUR, twisting the mean aggression (by an American Aggressor no doubt) into something that made me laugh every time I walked by.

A conceptual piece comprised of an imaginary abstract alphabet.
The "letters" spell out a haiku:

streams of thought carry
inquiry that wraps around
river's pebbly path

The detail spells out the word "pebbly".

I am interested in the blank slate that can be formed by the recombination of conventional signs,
this recombination can scramble meaning and open up the doors for new interpretation.
A re-evaluation of the message of the sign.

I encountered this sign when traversing the construction-filled streets of Boston during the Big Dig construction project.
The actual location was near the Aquarium as I recall.

I was delighted to see that the City of Boston had an active public art plan during construction, although they claimed to not know anything about it when I sent a note of thanks with this photo to the Arts and Tourism office...

Sadly the sign is gone as is the ugly overpass that had shadowed the city for too many years...

While attending a workshop with Simone Forti in Orvieto, Italy, I tumbled into love with psychogeography. Sometimes my meandering evolves into movement phrases, textile pieces, poetic texts, or soundscapes. Other days I merely gather images on my phone to send as silly missives to friends.

For the love of pigs and chickens, I can not remember where I happened upon the first sign. It instantly reminded me of the first pages of The Little Prince. About a year later, I was in San Francisco performing with Anne Bluethenthal. I found the missing snake notice fluttering among some signs for sublets on a telephone pole near her home. I was charmed by the description of spots under the chin as if the average passer-by might stop and snuggle up to it like a puppy or a kitten.

I am the Founder and President of Plan C Strategies: Boot Camp for Your Entire Life. I take photos with my iPhone. Signs and license plates are my favorites. I have many, many, but selected three as requested.

The photos selected are from a series of digital manipulations sourced from the obsequious street markings utility repairmen line our streets with. I have long been fascinated by the language they use and the visual noise it creates. Taken out of context, they speak a new language whispered only to the viewer.

1. Hamilton, a town on Montana 93 south, traveling from Missoula to the Salmon River. We did a u-turn to take the shot. Once past the towns, the scenery is unbelievably spectacular. And so much is uninhabited! Last great places, indeed. Tucked into these vast spaces are people who might be the last of the American Individualists, if there ever really were any, living a rough, honest, and surprisingly compassionate life far away from the madding crowd.

2. The ad also tickles me for its terrible line break.

3. Emblematic of who co-exists here in Montana
